Getting ready for your wedding is a huge undertaking. As if you didn’t have enough on your plate, now you are planning a wedding. Many of you are working or in school…or BOTH. I also know, and can relate to, most brides want to look her best on her wedding day.

Here are some personal favorite things that I have adopted in my life. With that said…for BETTER OR FOR WORSE…there is an exception to everyone of these points. And I am going to share those as well. Nobody is perfect. Enjoy the process. Enjoy the journey of your engagement and wedding planning. And GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK! Smile a lot. Laugh a lot. And if these thing I mention below are part of your focus right now, acknowledge that you are doing the best you can. Even if you adopt one new behavior, if it helps you find some peace during this extraordinarily busy and sometimes stressful time, then well done to you. It’s important for me to say that this isn’t a guilt trip nor am I trying to preach in any way! This is me sharing my perspective and hopefully it will also make you giggle. For me improvement lies in my own awareness. I can’t say that I do all of these things every day to perfection, but being aware has pushed me in a better direction!

1. Yoga – Yoga has been a big part of my life for 15 years. I started at a gym and then 8 years ago when I could no longer stand the cold room and the clanking of the gym equipment, I made the move to a yoga studio…which I am completely obsessed with. When I step into that studio and onto my mat, everything about my day goes away. All of my lists and thinking disappears and I am in a sanctuary where I can BREATHE, take care of my body and let everything go for 90 minutes. Finding something that makes you refresh your mind and body is a gift. Whether it is a walk with a friend, meditation, a bike ride or a class at the gym. Find time for yourself!

SHARE: Do the best you can. Don’t create unrealistic expectations. Try to etch out time to exercise but if something comes up, such is life. There is always tomorrow!

2. Skincare – So…I turned 40 in 2012. GULP. I am more than 1/2 way to 41 and I am still struggling with that a little bit. But with the big 4-0 came a major focus on my skin. I swear I haven’t been this obsessed since my own wedding way back in 1997! What I can tell you is that while I am not a skincare expert in any way, shape or form, I do have some things that I have found really work. No gimmicks, I swear! First off, if you haven’t invested in a Clarisonic, I HIGHLY recommend! It might just be the best money this girl has ever spent! It takes a few weeks for your skin to purge (in my experience)…so don’t start using this 2 weeks before your wedding. Second is another Clarisonic product called the Opal. And while this is focused on the area around your eyes…I say it can never hurt to start taking care of this area when you are young. Within a few days, I saw an improvement that nothing else has yet to achieve. Lastly, my most recent obsession, is hand made makeup and skincare from The All Natural Face. The make all their products in their Framingham store but you can also order online. These product are amazing. All vegan, all natural, no chemicals, no additives. And I swear the make up lasts better than anything I’ve ever used. The other products are made with good organic oils to hydrate your skin yadda yadda yadda… And when I tell you these products are reasonable, that is the understatement of the century. It’s not a fancy place but the products are great. It took me a year of a friend telling me to go in (thanks Shannon!) and I’ve been 3 consecutive weeks since!!!

SHARE:

I had the dreaded pimple on my wedding day. I had been getting regular facials and I made the mistake of going in the day before my wedding. My esthetician basically started picking around at my skin and wah-la. Guess what I woke up to on my wedding day. And I am still standing. My advise? Go with the flow. Be gentle with yourself…and your skin!

3. Diet – I have been a vegetarian for 20 years (YIKES). I have been gluten free for nearly 4 years (by choice…I was recommended by a therapist to try GF to help with inflammation from a car accident). And do my best to follow an Ayurvedic diet. We all know that food is our fuel. And again, I am no expert…just talking from my own experience. What we eat can make or break us. Healthy foods make us feel healthy, keep our weight where it should be and give us sustainable energy.

SHARE:

As health conscious as I am…I LOVE my sweets. Ice cream, sour patch kids, jelly beans…you name it. The key here is that I do my best. Don’t deny yourself. Everything in moderation.

4. Pamper Yourself – With this one, I could go on and on. I love massages (if you need an amazing massage therapist see Shannon or Larry Geoghegan at Natick Massage), pedicures, acupuncture, exercising (I know crazy, right?). I also love jumping rope with my kids, playing with my dog, a good book, dinner with friends, hanging out with my parents and going away for a weekend alone with my hubby.

SHARE:

Let’s be honest when you’re in the thick of it, these things this can feel like another item on your to do list. But I know for me, etching out time for pure enjoyment can not only be a challenge but often ridden with guilt. But afterwards, I am always glad I did it!

5. Smile , Laugh and Breath- Smiling can literally transform your day. Try smiling at someone. It will change your day when they smile back at you (yes for no reason and yes to a complete stranger). Laughter is the best medicine. So laugh a little! And lastly breathing slow breaths quiets the nervous system. So take a deep breath!

SHARE:

Unfortunately in our society these things don’t come naturally. The work ethic in our country, I think, has had an impact on our well being leaving many of us with fast paced, stress induced lives. I remember at coworkers would tell me they could hear me sighing from down the hall. Good but not good. I wasn’t breathing well (probably because of stress) and then subconsciously let out this big sigh! Breathing is something I am focused on improving each day.

Call me an ocean fanatic. A lover of weddings. Gratuitous for amazing clients. So when you put those things together, you get one ecstatic wedding coordinator! I felt so honored to be part of Erin and Tom’s entire wedding weekend in the wonderful Cape Cod town of Osterville.

Erin, Tom and their bridal party stayed at The Wianno Club in Osterville, literally set on the edge of the ocean. It is New England charm at it’s best with views almost indescribable. To say it took my breath away wouldn’t be an exaggeration! The girls were so fortunate to be able to use their spectacular sunroom as their hair and make up studio and take in this incredible setting as they got ready for Erin’s big day!

When it was time to depart for the ceremony, guests and the bridal party were taken by trolley. Erin and her Dad were driven by a family friend in her Dad’s Antique Ford. Honoring Tom’s Greek heritage, their traditional ceremony took place at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in nearby Centerville. The ceremony was full of wonderful traditions as well as a beautiful live choir and musicians. And to include Erin’s heritage they were greeted by a Bagpiper as they walked down the aisle as a married couple!

After the ceremony, guests moved on to the private Oyster Harbors Club. Lucky for them, they had the most perfect September day so they were able to have cocktail hour and photos outdoors. As guests arrived, they were invited to the lawn sprawling with adirondack chairs and a patio with lawn furniture where they enjoyed signature cocktails, a bountiful raw bar and passed hors d’oeuvres, all served with fun custom cocktail stirrers and napkins. Erin and Tom decided that a nautical, beachy feel was the way to go with their weekend long wedding celebration. Their color scheme started wtih their invitations and was carried through most of the fine details. I especially loved their “logo” with their initials and art of the cape, which they used on their printed materials. Erin gave her bridesmaids navy and white embroidered totes as gifts and the details continued with their programs, menu cards, placecards and linens to the custom cocktail napkins, straws and stirrers and beautiful florals in blue hydrangea. Before cocktail hour ended, the photographers took full advantage of the deck overlooking the guests by taking a spectacular panoramic photo!

Once everyone was inside and seated the bridal party, Tom and Erin were announced. After speeches were given Eye 2 Eye got the party started and kept it going all night long. It was hard to keep this crown down. They were having a blast! And what’s a wedding these days without an after party? For the guests with more energy, they boarded the bus and headed to The Fox Hole to end the night. It was the perfect ending to a fabulous day for the loveliest couple!

Why Hire a Wedding Coordinator?

I am often asked why a bride might hire a wedding coordinator when they have a hotel wedding coordinator as part of their “package”. So I thought I’d take this opportunity to address the main differences in our roles. A common misconception is that a wedding coordinator at a hotel does everything that a wedding coordinator does. So this blog isn’t to sound biased or to say that a wedding couldn’t be fantastic without a wedding coordinator but rather to clarify the differences in our jobs.

The sales person at a hotel is clearly very important and I rely on them for a lot of information I need! They are the person who will help you to understand the in’s and out’s of the property. They will have seen the spaces used in a variety of ways and will have the most input on the pros and cons in terms of what works well and what may not. They also will help you through your tasting and menu planning. The day of the wedding they will most likely be on site for part of the day and will have a handle on many of the logistics around the hotels responsibilities, which are typically focused on the food and venue. Often times, simultaneous to your getting ready, they are meeting with other clients, showing the space and working. As they should. That’s their job!

A wedding coordinators job is to be there for YOU. When you hire a coordinator you have someone always in your corner, looking out for your best interest. In my opinion there are two very important aspects of our job. One is to know every single detail of your plans, your vendors and that the day runs on time. The other is to have formed a relationship that will put you at ease so you can enjoy every moment with out worrying about whether your band has arrived or if the napkin is folded correctly. A wedding coordinator is on site from the moment that your vendors arrive and are always easily found so that if there are any questions, they can be addressed quickly, clearly and seamlessly!

You don’t get to choose your venue coordinator. But you do get to choose your wedding coordinator. When you decide to hire a coordinator it’s a relationship based on trust. So trust your instincts!

I very often work at hotels and equally as much with caterers. I am most humbled when a client is referred to me because I know they understand and respect my role and that they feel these clients could benefit from a bit more attention. The other thing is the feedback that I get from vendors when they find out that a bride has hired a coordinator. If you are unsure, ask them for yourself! They are usually relieved, particularly the photographers and bands, because they can focus on what they are there to do…take pictures and play music. They don’t have to worry about what time is it because we are there to do that for them!

And for those who don’t think you can afford hiring a planner or don’t want to use a planner, you might consider a “day of” coordinator. After nearly 10 years of as full service planner, I decided to create the foundation of my business on “day of” because I believe whole-heartedly in the value and affordability. At the time there was a clear void in the market. Today I continue to stay focused on “day of” but offer additional consultation to clients looking for a bit more. So there are options. It is no longer a luxury. It’s the foundation to a successful day and more and more brides are recognizing the value!

Happy New Year! All in all, 2013 is off to a great start! Amazingly, things haven’t quieted down…even during the “slow season”! Last week we received word that we are the recipient of 2 awards…WeddingWire’s Bride Choice Award and The Knot Best of Weddings 2013. We are so appreciative of the recognition and honored to work with such great clients and vendors.

I feel like I am writing my thank you speech for a “People’s Choice Award” but I just want to thank all my brides and grooms for voting for The Day Of and for making 2012 our best year yet! I am my boss…so the only person holding me accountable is me (sometimes I think that is tougher than having a real boss). Which is why these awards are even more meaningful. They are the validation that what I am doing works. That my clients are satisfied with me, my services and the people I am fortunate to work alongside. Our clients’ recognition is the best award of all! As a services company, our reputation is all we have.

While word of mouth and vendor recommendations have been our mainstay, in 2012 we ventured into the social media world. While this is a significant effort, it is my pride and honor to share amazing events, experiences and ideas. So…thank you from the bottom of my heart to all clients who have taken the time out of their busy, newlywed lives to write about their experiences with The Day Of.

Having been a full service event planner for nearly 10 years, I chose “day of” as my focus. I love what I do. I love learning my clients plans, hopes and dreams. I love seeing things and making suggestions that they may not have otherwise thought of. I love that I am able to offer to my clients the benefits of an experienced full service planner at an affordable price. We are invested in our clients and at the end of the day, we can run all the social media out there but what we do is based on an amazing relationship, communication, experience and a good sense of humor doesn’t hurt. Here’s to an amazing 2013!

Grab your jackets and earmuffs ladies and gents, ‘cause winter is approaching! As the air outside becomes cooler, and anticipation for the first big snow fall is growing, it’s time to embrace all the goodness that winter offers. So if you think this is the most wonderful time of the year, then you’d probably agree that it’s the perfect season for a wedding. But first check out these helpful tips we found to be your guide:

1) The first question you should ask yourself is what is your winter color palette? You may choose to embrace the winter hues of blue, white, silver, and gold. Or for a warmer feel, use a palette of cream and cranberry. Since most winter weddings are inside you can be as bold and elegant with the colors as you’d like. Our only caution is not to overdo the white; as little touches of color go a long way.

2) Warm your guests up by serving signature hot drinks at cocktail hour. Alcoholic beverages can consist of hot toddies, spiced wine, coffee and Kahlua or Bailey’s. Or, for those who don’t always want an alcoholic beverage, serve tea, hot apple cider, and eggnog. A hot chocolate bar is the perfect send off as your guests head home. There could be a choice of milk, white, and dark chocolate. But it’s the accouterments that make this fun! Add special treats such as peppermint stick straws, chocolate dipped spoons, marshmallows, whip cream, and mint leaves.

3) How are your guests getting to their seats? You can attach names to sleighs, snowmen and snowwomen, and snowflakes. There are so many fun favors to give out at a winter wedding. These include tins of hot chocolate mix-ins or tea, a Christmas tree to go, assorted chocolate snow flake pops, and snow globes. Whatever you choose your family and friends will love it!

4) Winter weddings mean roses, tulips, calla lilies, and arrangements of full flowers. These flowers can be used in your centerpieces or you can use your creativity. You might try bowls of pinecones and pomegranates or a bowl of ornaments wrapped in a wreath. If you want a vase instead of a bowl, mason jars of cranberries or white tree branches is a nice touch. Instead of a floral bouquet, you may consider using pine needle branches and cranberries to add a splash of color. A friendly reminder…if your ceremony is at a church talk to the director about what decorations they have so you can save money!

5) Keeping you toasty is the number one priority. When taking outdoor pictures change from your heels into a pair of cute, but warm and water proof boots. And a little fur goes also goes a long way! Remember to coordinate bridesmaids’ outerwear for those pictures.

The day was cloudy for Emma and Pete’s wedding, but the rain held off for the ceremony that was held in the front lawn of the Pete’s father’s home. It was modestly decorated, for the landscape itself was spectacular beyond words! Programs, which were originally going to be used as fans, were handed out and served as cover from the few sprinkles of rain. Guests took seats in white garden chairs as Emma, our beautiful bride, emerged from behind the house. Her bridesmaids were by her side in different styled royal blue dresses. Emma and Pete exchanged vows on the front steps of the house, and then it was time to celebrate the newlyweds.

It was just a short walk over to the tent where the cocktail hour took place. The first stop was the guestbook table, which had a personal touch. The couple used a recipe book for guests to leave their signature. The cook book is something Emma and Pete will use and always be remembered of their special day. Also unique to this couple was the placecard table. Used in place of tent cards were envelopes hung on ribbon from bulletin boards. The boards were decorated with seashells and ribbons tying in the royal blue and beach theme. Cocktail hour would not be complete without the beautiful landscape that spilled out onto the marina.

Once guests walked up the back stairs to a tented grassy patio at the back of the house, Emma and Peter were introduced into their first dance. The tents were adorned with little lights strung throughout and blue and white lanterns, giving the tent a beachy twilight feeling. The oceanic color scheme was carried through from the glasses, to the napkins, the cake, and even the blue hydrangea centerpieces. After a little dancing everyone helped themselves to the buffet. Like all the other unique touches this wedding had to offer, the buffet included a pig roast. While guests were waiting in line, the landscape that was so beautiful just a few hours before proved to be truthful at all times while the sun was setting. Dancing took the night away followed by a bonfire and s’mores. What a great night that Emma and Pete shared with their friends and family.

It’s time to talk about colors! A pop of color sets the mood and can change something boring into something worth talking about. What colors will be hot in 2013? Pantone has put out their annual color report for this coming spring entitled “The Balancing Act”. This title came from the need to find a balance between our busy days and search for down time. The vibrancy and neutrality colors in this palette are in balance to create a plethora of combinations for you to choose from. Let’s take a look at what colors you should be considering for this spring!

1) This year, greens are replacing browns. Just like brown, green can be found in the outside environment, and can offer a base to support other colors you want to incorporate in your wedding. Utilize the warmness springs bring in having the outdoor greens be a part of your day. These greens are bright “Tender Shoots”, refined “Emerald”, and calm “Grayed Jade”. All other colors play well with green.

2) Need something blue? This year’s blues are not too different from last year, and the colors are timeless. You can never go wrong with blue, but don’t feel like you are forced into it because it is a staple color. Think outside the box when pairing it with other colors. For those evening weddings use “Dusk Blue” to match the time of day. “Monaco Blue” is a color that will add strength and simplicity to your theme.

3) You can’t go wrong with a simplistic color as a base. Pantone recommends “Linen”. This color has an organic feel to it, and that is perfect for the spring time. A neutral color such as this will let other colors you love pop in your decorations. And if you are looking to only use neutrals and light colors pair linen with white.

4) To add your pops, there are four fun colors that will make a statement. These colors are “African Violet”, “Poppy Red”, “Nectarine”, and “Lemon Zest”. You may use these colors sparingly in slight touches here and there like pillows on cocktail seating or candles or in full force in centerpieces, flowers, clothing for and more for a schematic feel.

The 2012 color of the year was “Tangerine Tango”, and we are curious to see what the color of 2013 will be. Whatever it is, let these hues be your guide in creating a beautiful picture. Event color inspiration often comes from fashion trends, so in planning your event grab those fashion magazines you love to read and get inspired!

Rusty and Merek were married on Friday of July 4th weekend at the lovely Boston Winery, setting the tone for their simple with a rustic touch wedding. I absolutely loved every minute of their day as this sweet, kind couple were married in the most intimate way with just 80 guests. There is something so special about small weddings! And seeing this couple so calm and in the moment was such a beautiful thing to experience and I am still beaming just thinking about them!

Guests first arrived at Venezia, located next door to the winery, for a pre-cocktail hour before heading over for the ceremony. The ceremony was held in the barrel room where the wine is made, stored and bottled by hand. The room was transformed into a romantic setting with votives on top of the wine barrels surrounding the room and columns wrapped with ivory vines and twinkle lights. The couple was married by a dear friend and while staying true to their simplicity, the bridal party consisted of Merek’s sister as her maid of honor and Rusty’s cousin as the best man, and Merek’s niece and Rusty’s daughter as their flower girls.

Cocktail hour, dinner and dancing were held in the main room of the winery. The room, already full of character, was designed by enhancing the charm of this Civil War era building turned winery. The columns were once again decorated, more wine barrels of course, tons of votive lights and beautiful floral centerpieces in shades of purple and white. Dinner was catered by Venezia and for dessert a gorgeous table was set with an assortment of cakes, chocolate dipped strawberries, and other delicious goodies…and of course lots and lots of wine! And what better way than to send guests home with the appropriate bottle stoppers and cork screws. Cute, right?

So let’s raise our glasses to Merek and Rusty (and their newest addition…yes they are having a baby!) to a life of health, happiness and full glasses of wine!

Hello fellow New Englander’s! It’s that time of year again- the leaves have started to change color, the air is crisp and cool, and the anticipation of the holiday’s is starting to set in. I’m sure you have a lot of plans in the works with Halloween and Thanksgiving right around the corner! So if you are planning a Fall wedding you might consider playing off of Autumn’s beauty by incorporating its natural elements to make your special day just as beautiful. Here are some ideas that we loved:

1) Choose your color scheme and take advantage of the bold and vibrant colors of the leaves; reds, oranges, yellows, browns, purples. Playing with warm, contrasting colors like crimson and gold, cream and wine, or neutrals with pops of color, will set the tone of the day. Incorporate colors into every aspect- napkins, centerpieces, bridesmaids dresses, groomsmen ties, and anything else that needs a color. The fallen leaves, colors, and scenery create an atmosphere that you and your guests will love.

2) Don’t worry if you’re stuck trying to figure out a creative way to display place cards. An approach with simplicity would be to attach the placecards on to a small pumpkin or apple. If you want to give guests something they may use after the fact, try a leaf paper holder. This not only works as a creative way to display place cards but may double as a favor.

3) I’m a girl who loves fall because it is pumpkin season- pumpkin pie, pumpkin lattes, and pumpkin carvings. If you are the same way there are a few ways to incorporate pumpkins into your wedding. Instead of a pillow for the ring bearer, tie the rings onto the stem of a small pumpkin for him to carry. As a treat for the guests, serve pumpkin soup not in a bowl, but in a small pumpkin. Another way to add a special detail is to carve you and your groom’s initials into pumpkins. You can place these at the guest book or place card table.

4) Small bouquets in a masons jar will give your centerpieces a rustic feel. Want to try something besides flowers? Use a bundle of wheat tied with a bow in a vase. You may also want to try branches with fall colored leaves on them. Talk to your florist to come up with exactly the right look for your ideal wedding.

Lastly, don’t underestimate these cooler days. Having shawls for yourself and bridesmaids is a nice touch and one that the girls will be so thankful for! You can find them at Peach Couture for just $9.99 each! We wish you the best of luck in planning your fall wedding! May it be as just as you have imagined!

This one room chapel, which dates back to 1872, was just the right size for their 120 guests. At the end of the ceremony, Jenn’s Dad surprised the couple with a dove release. And then the couple drove off in an antique car adorned with multi-colored balloons and “Just Married” signs. Just precious! Immediately following, the reception took place at a Jenn’s grandparents waterfront property in Westport, MA.

Cocktail hour was held on the lawn and gravel driveway between the home and the barn which was covered with distressed gray framed photos of the couples engagement. In front of the barn was the bar where they served local beer and their signature cocktail ”Jen ‘n Juice”, housemade raspberry soda, Berkshire Mt. Distilleries Gin and lime, served in mason jars with the colors of their wedding setting the tone from the get go with gray and white striped straws and pink beverages.

Next, guests were led into a Sperry tent. Since the weather decided to agree, the tent sides were off. The perimeter of the tent was lined with twinkle lights and hanging from the ceiling were natural paper lanterns. The tables were a mix of farm tables and round tables. The shabby chic look with tables set in linen gray, white chivari chair, florals in shades of pink and ivory and lots of candlelight. Guests enjoyed their dinner served by the incredible Chive Catering while listening to a jazz trio through dinner. But as soon as dinner was over the dancefloor was open…and packed. And to top off the night was a fireworks display off the dock and over the water. This wedding was picture perfect!
